Hellicane: Poets Respond to Hurricane Katrina

(I have for many years now for at least half the time I\'m in the shower, thought how lucky I am to have hot or cold water at my fingertips. Until I moved to Arizona, it was always hot water I cherished. The past nine days of seeing all that dirty water in New Orleans doing no one any good, has only reinforced that idea and I finally put it down in writing.)\r\n\r\nI pull the curtain\r\nSo I can hide\r\nI feel certain\r\nOnce inside\r\n\r\nUnder the shower head\r\nHot water steams\r\nMy skin turns red\r\nAnd brings day dreams\r\n\r\nI\'m the luckiest damned\r\nPerson on this planet\r\nI turn the tap\r\nGet my climate\r\n\r\nToo hot? Too hot?\r\nI can turn it cold\r\nToo cold? Too cold?\r\nI can twist it bold\r\n\r\nWater drops hit\r\nFlow down my limbs\r\nThe splash sounds off\r\nMy anger dims\r\n\r\nHere I stand in the shower\r\nHour after hour\r\nafter hour\r\nafter hour\r\nNo need to complain\r\nI have the power\r\n\r\nI know people\r\nWith no lights\r\nWith no food\r\nThey get in fights\r\n\r\nI know people\r\nHigh on the drug\r\nLife hits hard\r\nThey just shrug\r\n\r\nI\'m in a desert\r\nI feel fine\r\nYet in Nairobi and Sahara\r\nPeople are dyin\'\r\nPeople are dyin\'\r\n\r\nI see people\r\npoor and black\r\npoor and black\r\nSee white brothers\r\nThink they\'ll never make it back\r\nNever make it back\r\n\r\nHere I stand in the shower\r\nHour after hour\r\nafter hour\r\nafter hour\r\nNo need to complain\r\nI have the power\r\n\r\nI\'m the luckiest damned\r\nPerson here on Earth\r\nI have my water\r\nI have mirth\r\n\r\nThis inside rain\r\nCrashes through my brain\r\nWater drains\r\nEases my pains\r\n\r\nSoothing, cooling\r\nFeeling great\r\nRunning, cleansing\r\nDark dirt and hate\r\n\r\nI have hot water
