Hellicane: Poets Respond to Hurricane Katrina

They built a city below the sea\r\nThey watched it drown in misery\r\nThey never planned for such tragedy\r\nThe leaders as lost as those in the sea\r\n\r\nSuch violence, and chaos, and rage and crime\r\nAnd no one is getting them out in time\r\n\r\nGodspeed to the soldiers and buses and boats\r\nGod grant all these desperate some peace and some hope\r\n\r\nPray for the the victims, so many to heal\r\nPray only generosity and kindness they feel\r\n\r\nSuch suffering and horror, far too much to bear\r\nAll alone in darkness, and no one seems to care\r\n\r\nEach day the death toll grows\r\nHow many missing, no one knows\r\n\r\nToo many to evacuate, so no one wants to speculate\r\nEveryone sees too little, too late\r\nWithout food or water how long can they wait\r\n\r\nTrapped in what once was their safety net\r\nNothing to drink but everything\'s wet\r\nWhy did the city leaders forget\r\nTheir own old and poor without a regret\r\n\r\nSurrounded by darkness...hopeless and lost\r\nPoor city planning, and they paid the cost\r\n\r\nLosing their homes and their lives and their loves\r\nPraying for angels to lift them above\r\n\r\nAs we all look for someone to blame\r\nSomeone should pay, its all such a shame\r\n\r\nThey said too much the levee would cost\r\nWe\'d have rather paid with money than with the lives that were lost\r\n\r\nAnd so, they did not fix the levee\r\nKnowing the threat, they still were not ready\r\n\r\nNo sirens to be heard as the levees fell\r\nNo warning of the impending hell\r\n\r\nNo way out and no way in\r\nYet they say they will rebuild again\r\n\r\nRebuild again, below the sea\r\nFinally fix the old levee\r\nThat idea just seems crazy\r\n\r\nAll those souls beneath the rubble\r\nAnd those left behind in trouble\r\n\r\nThrough the sespool they must wade\r\nBecause of mistakes the leaders made\r\n\r\nYet not one leader has apologized\r\nFor reckless abandon of so many lives\r\n\r\nThe worst disaster to hit the States\r\nAnd no one really knows their fates\r\n\r\nAs part of our country and history lie sinking\r\nWe must open our eyes and do our own thinking\r\n\r\nUsing our votes for accountability\r\nTaking individual responsibility\r\nTo prevent another preventable catastrophe
