Hellicane: Poets Respond to Hurricane Katrina

I used to think America was the best place to live\r\nNow I wonder with amazement as I see it has nothing to give\r\n\r\nI sit with eyes in tears\r\nAs the media focuses on our fears\r\n\r\nThe nation sees our pain\r\nSome companies see wealth to gain\r\n\r\nJust as they did the very day after\r\nNo help, no guidance, no relief after our disaster\r\n\r\nOur resilliant children smile and play,\r\nin crowded shelters, just as if it were any day\r\n\r\nWe try to smile back and keep them strong\r\nProtecting them from the truth of our nation\'s wrong\r\n\r\nWhere is Mr. Bush in our time of need?\r\nTsunami victims got food in a day and not a week\r\n\r\nThe politicians all poke fingers to blame\r\nBut for us, our dire situation is still the same\r\n\r\nAren\'t we all surprised? That in our own true need\r\nOur government funds are for other nation\'s children to feed?\r\n\r\nSo they quickly give us food stamps, without a refrigerator to store\r\nPeople cramped in shelters, with small cots on a cold floor\r\n\r\nTelephones glued to our ears, hours go by as we sit on hold\r\nCall another telephone number we are told\r\n\r\nSo, we are glad television ratings are up\r\nBut for us, I guess we\'re stuck\r\n
