Collection

This is the 1937 Spur Gas softball team from the collection of retired Jefferson Parish Sheriff Al Cronvich. In 1935, the idea of a park was conceived by Mr. Ed Brandt, then a criminal deputy sheriff in New Orleans, and he was the driving force behind the construction. In the rear, center, is Red Thomas, the team\'s coach. At left is Fritz Kirschenheuter, a Spur station manager who sponsored the team. Pictured are, from left, front row: Jack Sibley, Carol Brandt, Walter Colbert, Gus Barker, Lloyd Oriol, Bruce Barker; back row: Buddy Murphy, unknown first name Hogan, Earl Boyer, Warren \"Pee Wee\" Nelson, Roby Travelbee, Lewis Oriol, and Clifford Brandt. The park was a lifely spot during the 1930s as Works Progress Administration bands played on Friday nights with dancing on St. Patrick Street.
