Beautiful Day In Texas

Collection

Elisha - Elisha and Iriane (refer to #38) were two of the first little girls we met at the Reliant Center. While waiting to serve food, in “Food Services” we handed out a bunch of paper, markers and crayons to young children sitting at the surrounding tables. Elisha and Iriane were two that won our hearts. At first they were both sitting at the table scribbling with darker colors. Other children were also at the table coloring violently and tearing up paper. The girls came up and showed us their first pictures and were describing how terrible the hurricane was. “It was mad,” they said. “Very very angry. It really scared us.” They also said something to the effect, about having to learn how to smile again. We listened, and just started telling funny stories. Approximately 30 minutes later the girls started drawing, birds, rainbows, etc. One of these drawings is #74 Beautiful Day in Texas. Also, the Sugar and Spice #10, I love New Orleans and Texas was drawn by same artist. We left the girls with sacks full of art supplies because they were going to “hand them out to teach smiles.” After Elisha made us repeat her location several times, “in the far left corner with a SpongeBob pillow,” we left to return the next day.
