Waiting To Be Rescued

Waiting To Be Rescued

Collection

This picture was drawn by a remarkable 12 year old boy. The image is Donald’s memory of waiting to be rescued. He and his mother were in their home as the water came in at an unimaginable rate. Donald managed to escape by swimming through a broken window. He survived on a rooftop for many hours watching the rescue helicopters. He was eventually rescued by boat and taken to the Superdome. After surviving there, alone, for three days without any food or water, he boarded a bus and arrived, alone, at the Houston Astrodome. “I see these pictures in my head, and I can make my pencil look like them.” His perspective and scale make his memory a reality for viewers. “I see details of things now, sometimes I wish I didn’t.” Through artwork, he formed a bond with the volunteers that enabled him to begin talking about his experience. On October 1, he was reunited with his Aunt and Grandmother in a shelter in Dallas, Texas. Donald describes his artistic ability as his “gift.” Katrina’s Kids Project is thrilled to be able to share his gift with everyone. Donald also drew (30 and 79)
