Collection

Photo of messages of love painted on the side of 3438 Cleveland St., the gutted, flood-damaged house owned by Helen Hill and Paul Gailiunas. Helen Hill, a filmmaker, was shot and killed by an intruder in the Marigny home she and her husband rented when they returned to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Her husband, Dr. Paul Gailiunas, suffered gunshot wounds in the attack but he was able to protect their 2-year-old son from harm. After Helen\'s death, makeshift memorial altars appeared on the doorstep of the house where she was murdered and on the porch of the home on Cleveland Street. After a while the landlord of the Bywater house removed the items; some of them them reappeared on the Cleveland Street porch.
