Ma Elsie and other elders knew the consequences of taking standardized tests were less forgiving for the most vulnerable of students. Education for black people has always been \"high stakes.\" Still, she believed that children had to gain the education of determination and pride that only came from beating \"the man\" at his own game.\r\n
