I am a stroke victim, I can not drive.\r\nI walk only with a walker. 40 or so\r\npeople in our assisted Living complex were\r\nabandoned by the Apartment management.\r\nI endured Hurricane Rita and survived in an\r\napartment with a badly damaged roof, no\r\nelectricity, or running water.\r\n\r\nIt took two days of threatening by my\r\nfriends in New York to inspire the Beaumont\r\nFire Dept. to evacuate us. All the Apartments\r\nresidents were loaded in a bus and taken \r\nto an abandoned Levi Strauss factory in\r\nSan Antonio. I arrived in San Antonio\r\nmore dead than alive. I was suffering from\r\nanother stroke. My wallet was stolen while\r\nI was in San Antonio.\r\n\r\nOn the Wednesday after the hurricane I\r\nwas transfered via another bus to Waco\r\nTexas.....By the time I arrived there, I was\r\nin congestive heart failure and kidney failure.\r\n\r\nNational Guard Doctors sent me via\r\nambulance to Providence Hospital.\r\nAfter 5 days in the hospital, I was sent\r\nto Ridgecrest Nursing home in Waco.\r\n\r\nThere, the Social Worker (Beverly McCully)\r\nWith the help of my friends in New York\r\nfinished getting me healthy enough to travel\r\nto Troy, NY via plane and wheelchair.\r\n\r\nI spent 11 days in the Nursing home.\r\n\r\nI lost everything in Beaumont, my furniture,\r\nmy books, my clothes my TV my computer.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generosity of a US Navy\r\nfriend and his wife I have a new apartment..\r\nand new furnishings....I had not seen Joe\r\nin 40 years. Before he showed up to take\r\nme to New York.\r\n\r\nThe Waco Tribune, The Troy Record,\r\nand ABC TV News have carried full accounts of my story....\r\n\r\nI am a 6th Generation Texan and I was\r\nborn and raised in Beaumont, Texas,\r\n\r\nMy Church friends in Beaumont,\r\nReformed Presbyterian Church, 4210\r\nCrow Rd. Rev. Mark Gibson helped salvage\r\nsome clothes, but 90% of my possessions\r\nand al of my belongings were lost,stolen,\r\nor looted by the good people of Beaumont.\r\n\r\nI will not return to Texas.....\r\n\r\nJerry B.
