Hellicane: Poets Respond to Hurricane Katrina

In this calm before the storm, how could we know\r\nAs the rolling trombone notes began to flow\r\nAnd laughter rose like flighty chorus lines?\r\nHow darkly, now, our memory defines\r\n\r\nThat scarce is laughter once the dark descends\r\nThe trouble is that no one comprehends\r\nHow veritably the fear destroys the hope\r\nAs water coils its smooth and deadly rope\r\n\r\nHow compact is a mother\'s world until\r\nHer loudly beating heart becomes quite still\r\nAn extra blessing fills her with delight\r\nShe gasps, afraid it\'s just a trick of light\r\n\r\nThen, children gather \'round and through her tears\r\nShe knows that God responded to her fears\r\nHe kept them safe and brought them to her side\r\nHer heart is full and tears of joy are cried\r\n
