Hellicane: Poets Respond to Hurricane Katrina

Torrential rain, hurricanes, storms in the night\r\nNatural disasters we\'re unable to fight\r\nSouth Florida withstood a catagory 1 hurricane\r\nA mild storm turned hostile, Katrina\'s her name\r\n\r\nShe uprooted trees, flying every which way\r\nPower was lost here for many a day\r\nFuel, ice and water were hard to be found\r\nBatteries fading, TVs silent of sound\r\n\r\nThis same day in August, thirteen years ago\r\nAndrew hit Florida, we watched his winds blow\r\nDestroying whatever crossed his violent path\r\nIs this date a coincidence or God\'s vengeful wrath\r\n\r\nKatrina left the Atlantic and continued to thrive\r\nGaining speed in the gulf she reached catagory 5\r\nThe worst hurricane the USA\'s ever seen\r\nLanding predicted to be in New Orleans\r\n\r\nEvacuate, leave the state, don\'t stick around\r\nBy any means possible travel to higher ground\r\nThe gulf coast is in for a horrible fate\r\nTake your loved ones and go before it\'s too late\r\n\r\nKatrina\'s winds violently struck the gulf coast\r\nThe eye hit Biloxi which seemed damaged the most\r\nNew Orleans\' French Quarter at first seemed okay\r\nUntil the three levees breached later that day\r\n\r\nEight feet of water soon flooded the town\r\nFolks climbed to their attics so not to drown\r\nThe poor, sick or elderly who could not stay at home\r\nWere told to seek shelter in the Superdome\r\n\r\nDays following Katrina, FEMA had still not arrived\r\nThere was no food or fresh water, causing many to die\r\nThe ill and the elderly needed something to eat\r\nOthers passed out from the unbearable heat\r\n\r\nNew Orleans should have been prepared for the worst\r\nBut nobody thought that the levees would burst\r\nDespite reports stating that the dams weren\'t equipped\r\nIt\'s hard to barricade a storm as enormous as this\r\n\r\nOur citizens\' welfare should be priority one\r\nWhy dwell on or question what should have been done\r\nMistakes of the past make us stronger and wise\r\nBut blaming each other won\'t bring back lives\r\n
