After evacuating for Katrina and then returning my parish looked completely different. The only way to describe it is to compare it to a town that had just been hit by a nuclear bomb. All around there were military vehicles driving around every corner, speaking on loud speakers to relay the latest information; helicopters with huge bags of sand flew over my house every five minutes. After some people returned to the parish a huge sandbag levee was built right in front of my house cutting me and my family off from the upper end of the parish that was not flooded. We had to ask permission from the cops constantly guarding my house to leave or return. Although my house was undamaged we still had an immense amount of trouble getting to it. Me and my family were extremely lucky and just nearly missed destruction from both Katrina and Rita.
