I remember Hurricane Katrina well. I was one week into my second semester of college at the University of New Orleans. I was living with my grandparents in New Orleans East. My grandparents decided not to evacuate for the hurricane. We had evacuated for years before, and it had always been a waste of time. This time they decided not to go through the hassle of trying to get out of the city, but decided we should leave our house. We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in the French Quarter. \r\nStaying at the hotel was an experience. When the hurricane hit everyone in the hotel had to be in the lobby. However, it was eventually ended, and everything seemed to be okay. It wasn\'t until the next day that we looked outside and could see the water rising on the street. We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton hotel for one week with no electricity, and the water rising outside. At the hotel food was rationed, and everyone was bored and upset all the time.\r\nThen, the U.S. Army came with trucks and weapons. They escorted everyone a few blocks down the street from the hotel and onto a bus. I walked those few blocks in waist deep water, and carrying my one bag I had brought to the hotel with me, over my head. Later, I found out that my grandparents had lost their entire house, and everything I had in that bag was everything I had in the world.\r\nThe bus took everyone to Baton Rouge, and allowed us to sleep in the lobby of a hotel for the night. However, we couldn\'t stay at this hotel because there were no rooms. We were allowed to wait there until family could come get us or we could take the next bus that was going to Houston. There was no family that could come get my grandparents and I. My grandparents searched for a hotel anywhere in Baton Rouge we could stay, but there were no rooms available. \r\nWe and other people who had no other options took the bus to Houston. There my grandparents rented a hotel room, and we stayed at the hotel for one week. I was bored in the hotel so I spent my time walking the streets of Houston. In that one week I found an excellent job opportunity, and then a great apartment. I decided I would stay in Houston. \r\nMy grandparents stayed in Houston for a while, and finally returned to New Orleans when they were able. They went to the house and saw it and everything in it in ruins. They had lived in that house for thirty-five years. Finally, my grandparents sold their house, and returned to Houston to live in an apartment.\r\nIt took a few years, but since then my grandparents and I have all returned to New Orleans. They bought a new house, and I am now in my final year at the University of New Orleans.\r\n
