One year ago, one could not ride a Chicago Airport bus or a Houston city bus beyond the metropolitan limits of those two cities. Since the return of public transit to New Orleans last fall, New Orleanians can ride these and other city buses on a regular basis.\r\n\r\nIn order to resurrect a barebones transit system in post-Katrina New Orleans, other city transit systems have provided formerly moth-balled buses. Those without a sense of direction in the city will find themselves confused when boarding buses with destination signs indicating Chicago Airport or the names of major streets in Houston. This slight hint of chaos has even moved over to the NO Regional Transit Authority buses that survived the flooding. Today on the way to work I saw a New Orleans bus with a route sign reading Elysian Fields, but it was moving along the Airline Highway/Tulane Avenue route. As passengers boarded, another sign read: To Station. \r\n
